The Village Voice is shutting down, as reported by Gothamist and CNNMoney. The announcement comes three years after the historic alternative weekly was bought out by businessman and publisher Peter Barbey. In a statement, he wrote, “The Village Voice was created to give speed to a cultural and social revolution, and its legacy and the voices that created that legacy are still relevant today.” He continued, “Although the Voice will not continue publishing, we are dedicated to ensuring that its legacy will endure to inspire more generations of readers and writers to give even more speed to those same goals.” Read the full statement below.

The Village Voice began in 1955 and was founded by Norman Mailer, Dan Wolf, and Ed Fancher. The publication published its final print edition in September of 2017 with Bob Dylan on the cover. The publication has since been online-only.
