Spoon played a somewhat secret show at Antone’s in Austin, their hometown, Friday night where they five songs from their upcoming ninth studio album. It is due out in March via Matador. The band announced the set to select fans on their email list Thursday night, including the link to an already-booked show which featured local acts Jai Malano and Don Leady & His Rockin’ Revue. As Austin 360 reports, both acts moved their sets back to allow Spoon to appear as the show’s opener.
After premiering the new songs from their untitled ninth LP, Spoon also played four of their other hits. As described by Austin 360, the new material as “mostly of a piece with the sharp-edged, punk-fueled pop that dominates the band’s back catalog, with no major sonic departures other than their gradual shift in recent years toward more reliance on keyboards.”
