Damon Albarn refuses to end performance and gets carried off stage by security

This weekend at Rockslide Music Festival in Denmark, Damon Albarn went far past breaking curfew. Africa Express, his collective, which includes Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, Seye Adeklan, and Songhoy Blues as members, performed a set that lasted five hours until 4 a.m. If he had it his way, we would have probably kept going.

Albarn was apparently in a high spirit, and also probably had drunk a little too much, leading to the collective to cover the likes of The Clash, Randy Newmanx and the Gorillaz. He also brought out guests including his Blur bandmate Graham Coxon and Laura Mvula.
Once it got to 4 a.m., however, organizers of the festival asked Albarn to end the show. He refused and encouraged the audience to cheer to support. Eventually, he was carried off stage.

Father John Misty Explains The Origin Of His Arcade Fire Cover

Father John Misty has unleashed a great cover of Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs” this week and in an interview with NME, he spoke the inspiration on choosing the song and revealed that the decision was for mundane and contractual reasons. His manager said he had to do a cover for CBC and that it was supposed to be a Canadian artist. After being shot down for Neil Young and Leonard Cohen, he went with Arcade Fire because he was hanging out with Win Butler before shooting.

Misty said: “That’s how these radio things go and then, on the internet, it gets spun into this like … ‘I just love doing these covers, I got so many under my belt, I just love whipping ‘em out at a moment’s notice and regaling the internet with reappropriated music.’ But I do love that song, and I really enjoy performing it.”

Artist to Watch: Transporting Planets

Hailing from Southern California, Transporting Planets is a shoegaze band consisting of Omar Akrouche, Eric Van Thyne and Gavin Baker. Self-described as “lively shoegaze,” the band initially took foot when Van Thyne recorded songs, that are on their first EP, and Akrouche and Baker joined when Van Thyne needed a live band. Since then, Van Thyne still records much of the instrumentals, however, Akrouche and Baker appear on various parts of the band’s album, especially on their recent self-titled record, Transporting Planets. The band plans to release an EP that includes b-sides from their previous EPs and albums. Transporting Planets encompasses an eclectic sound that dives listeners right into the world of shoegaze.

Grammy Camp Los Angeles 2015 Playlist

Just a few of the amazing musicians that came out of Grammy Camp this past week in Los Angeles are featured on this playlist. The camp held an eclectic mix of artists, whether they create electronic music or alternative. For more on any of these artists, follow them on their Soundclouds.

The Melodic Tree’s 5 Favorite Albums of 2015 So Far: #1 I Love You, Honeybear

Josh Tillman, under the pseudonym of Father John Misty, has returned this year with I Love You, Honeybear, the much-anticipated follow-up to Fear Fun, and gives a passionate performance throughout the album. The obvious stand-out track on the LP is the hit, “Chateau Lobby #4 (In C for Two Virgins)” in which it has a massive sound to it with its brass and strings arrangements. Another stand-out track was the following song, “True Affection” which maintains Tillman’s classic lyrics but with an electronic sound to it, straying away from the general vibe of the album as a whole. Overall, this album is an ode to his wife, and a sincere one, demonstrating the intimacy and closeness he has felt out of it.

The Melodic Tree’s 5 Favorite Albums of 2015 So Far: #2 Goon

The heart-wrenching debut album from Tobias Jesso Jr. will pull at the heartstrings of anyone, no matter whether or not they have experienced the same level of heartbreak as Jesso expresses on Goon. He has an ability to express simplicity and yet still display his emotions in a powerful way. The moving and slow stand-out track, “How Could You Babe” builds up until it reaches the climatic chorus and stays that way until the contemplative ending, where there is still the hint of desperation from his heartbreak. In general, this LP is a simple and yet special album that anyone could relate to.
