Filmmaker Paul Clipson dead at 54

Experimental filmmaker Paul Clipson has died as KQED reports. He passed on February 3rd at 53. His cause of death is unknown. The filmmaker worked with musicianslike Grouper, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, How to Dress Well, Lawrence English, Sarah Davachi, Maggi Payne, and Black Spirituals. Clipson moved to San Francisco in the 1990s where he began making visuals for experimental musicians while working as a film projectionist at San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art for two decades.

A clip from Isle of Dogs, the latest film from Wes Anderson has arrived. A group of dogs, in the clip, fight over a bag of scraps. Watch it below, via Vulture. The stop-motion film features a cast of Yoko Ono, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Scarlett Johannson, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, and more. It will arrive in theaters on March 23rd.

Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples’ new song teased in Black Panther trailer

Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples appear in the new trailer for Marvel’s upcoming movie Black Panther with what seems to be a new song. Watch it below. The soundtrack for the film, Black Panther: The Album is produced and curated by both Kendrick and Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith. Black Panther is to be in theaters February 16th while the soundtrack is out February 9th. The film is also scored by Ludwig Göransson.

Watch Rihanna in the first Ocean’s 8 trailer

The Ocean’s 8 trailer, the Ocean’s Eleven spin-off led by women, has come out. Watch the video below. The film features Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, and more. It was co-written and directed by The Hunger Games director Gary Ross. The film follows a heist at New York City’s Met Gala. The film is set to be out June 8th, 2018.

Watch Mitski star in new short film SITTING

Mitski stars in SITTING, a new film directed and written by Emily Yoshida. Mitski plays a “sitter” for people taking an intense drug that allows them to “meet God.” The short film is also heavily soundtracked by Mitski’s Puberty 2 song “Thursday Girl.” Watch it below.

Watch the trailer for Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ new documentary

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have released a trailer for their upcoming tour documentary. Directed by Patrick Daughters, There Is No Modern Romance follows the band on the road during their shows in the UK in 2003 behind their album Fever to Tell. It will be bundled with their upcoming reissue of Fever to Tell on October 20th via Interscope/UMe. Watch a trailer for the doc here

Louis C.K.’s new movie gets theatrical release date

Louis C.K.’s first movie in 16 years is coming to theaters. I Love You, Daddy will be in theaters in New York City and Los Angeles starting Friday, November 17th and will receive a wider, North American, release on Friday, December 1st. The film is his first feature length film in 16 years and stars C.K., John Malkovich, Chloë Grace Moretz, Rose Byrne, Edie Falco, Charlie Day, Pamela Adlon, Helen Hunt, and Ebonee Noel. I Love You, Daddy also premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this year.

Discogs expanding to films, comics, books, more

Discogs, in March, officially launched the beta for their spinoff site Gearogs to the public, hoping to become “the largest database of audio equipment on the planet.” At the same time, their efforts into books, comics, films, and posters were also being developed. Those sites have been officially launched: FilmogsBookogsComicogs, and Posterogs are now open to the public, with free listing and seller fees “for a limited time during the public launch.” They are aiming to hit 9 million releases in its database by the end of September.

See Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in first pictures from Bohemian Rhapsody

Rami Malek, the star on “Mr. Robot,” is getting prepared for his portrayal of Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in the upcoming biopic about the band, Bohemian Rhapsody. Entertainment Weekly shared the first look at him as Mercury today. See below. Malek said it was “a very affirming moment” when he first saw himself in hair and makeup. Sacha Baron Cohen was set to portray Mercury in 2010, but he eventually left the project over creative differences with Queen. Brian May later disputed Cohen’s claims. The film has been in production for almost a decade but is set to go to theaters in December 2018.

Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack gets vinyl reissue

Josie and the Pussycats, the comic-based musical comedy that follows an all-girl band and their run-ins with the music industry, is getting a soundtrack vinyl reissue. It is set to be out September 26th via Mondo and the score is almost entirely filled with tracks by the fictional band. The frontwoman of rock band Letters to Cleo, Kay Hanley, provided the vocals for every Josie and the Pussycats song.

Mondo, Alamo Drafthouse, and Birth.Movies.Death. will also co-host a reissue celebration at Los Angeles’ Ace Hotel which will include a film screening, appearances by co-directors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan, and a Josie and the Pussycats set by Hanley. There will be merchandise also sold at the event: leopard-print vinyl records, a 7” record featuring DuJour songs (the film’s featured boy band), and a 12-page booklet featuring behind-the-scenes photos.
