Mitski Reviews Harry Styles’ New Album

Harry Styles released his self-titled solo debut recently. Now, Mitski who has covered One Direction’s “Fireproof” has written a review of it for the Talkhouse. Mitski begins her review with, “As I’ve always done with beautiful people, I’ve long only noticed Harry Styles from afar.” She continues with comparing him to the popular boy in school, saying that this album is when you learn that “this beautiful, distant boy from school sometimes says stupid things like, ‘You’re cool, no one else knows who the Beatles are.’” Mitski goes on and finds fault with some of the album’s more tired affectations, but says that she would still “stand like an ant in an arena crowd just to witness his magnetism; his expansion as a performer since his beginnings in One Direction.” Read her full piece here.

Watch Fleet Foxes’ new “Fool’s Errand” video

Fleet Foxes shared a new song from their upcoming album Crack-Up called “Fool’s Errand” last night. They have now shared a music video for that track. It is directed by Robin Pecknold’s brother, Sean Pecknold and was shot on 35 mm film, and features art direction by Adi Goodrich. The video shows interpretive dancing, nature imagery, and, at the end, a wolf. Watch it below and find Sean Pecknold’s statement on the visual below that. The Pecknold brothers also collaborated on the videos for Helplessness Blues’ “Grown Ocean” and “The Shrine/An Argument,” as well as the Crack-Up album trailer.

Crack-Up will arrive June 16th via Nonesuch.

Sean Pecknold:

“Fool’s Errand” couldn’t have been shot on anything but 35mm film. The timeline was tight, but shooting on film made us focus and shoot only what we absolutely needed for the edit. There is still nothing like the look of film and it matches the sonic quality of the Foxes music quite well.

Perfume Genius analyzes “Slip Away” on “Song Exploder”

Perfume Genius was a guest on the “Song Exploder” podcast recently and he discussed the making of “Slip Away,” from his latest album No Shape. Mike Hadreas, producer Blake Mills, and recording engineer Shawn Everett discuss the song’s creation, and Hadreas shared an acoustic demo and isolated tracks from the recording. “I wanted the song to sound American,” Hadreas says. “I wanted that sort of Springsteeny spirit to it.” He also notes that it’s “definitely a love song” and that it’s “joyous and free in a way that [he] had never written before.” Listen to the full episode below.
