Rhymefest buys Kanye West’s childhood home to convert into a community arts space

Kanye West has not much good news lately, but his fellow Chicagoan Rhymefest did a good deed on behalf of West’s charity Donda’s House. Fest purchased West’s childhood home and wants to convert it into a “community arts incubator” with a state-of-the-art recording studio. He plans also for the home to a curriculum space for Donda’s House and music museum for Chicago’s Southside. Read the official statement from Donda’s House 2011 below.

In order to deepen the organization’s impact, Donda’s House has acquired a home facility that will provide a permanent location for all of the Donda’s House family to gather, offer programming, and grow. Donda’s House envisions this facility as not only a homegrown hub of economic activity for the southside but also a gathering place for the community with events and concerts. Donda’s House selected this location in particular, because it is the former home of the organization’s namesake Dr. Donda West, who at one time provided similar services and support to incubate young artists. Donda’s House is committed to the success of Chicago’s young creatives and this property will help these young people flourish.

Regina Spektor revisits her past in the video for “Bleeding Heart”

Regina Spektor has come far since her youth, spending her time learning the piano in the Soviet Union. Those memories are the focus of the singer-songwriter’s newest video for Remember Us to Life track “Bleeding Heart.”

Lead by her Spektor’s husband, Jack Dishel, the clip includes footage of the musician singing and dancing in front of an illustrated skyline with old videos and photos from her early years. Her black-and-white pieces came thanks to her father, who Spektor remembers fondly.

“Throughout my childhood I’d sometimes get tired of standing as [my father] took his light meter readings or asked me to play piano or pose,” Spektor said to NPR. “But now when I look back on every recorded moment, I’m just grateful. It took hard work and patience on his part — most of the photos were developed and printed by him in his darkroom in spare time from work.”
