Jack White’s Third Man Records expands to Detroit

Over the last five years, Jack White and his record label, Third Man Records have been based in Nashville. Now, however, White will go back home in Detroit with plans to expand the label’s operations in the city’s Cass Corridor.

Partnering with Tom Kartsotis, the founder of Shinola, a Detroit-based company that specializes in  watches, bicycles, shoe polish, and various other leather goods, White has purchased the building that is currently home to the Shinola Flagship store at 441 W. Canfield.

The building will serve as office and retail space for Third Man, and is set to open in time for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event on November 27th. The label promises “many special surprises in store.”

Cass Corridor is where The White Stripes’ played its very first show, in the place of White’s high school, and a part of the city that White refers to as “always been the most inspiring area of Detroit for me as an artist and as a Detroiter.”

Also in the statement, he added He adds, “From the great visual artists like Gordon Newton to the music of the Gories, and the birth of the Detroit garage rock scene, the Corridor has nurtured Detroit’s soul and inventiveness for decades. That spirit pushes forward with Shinola’s passion and will come full circle for the artists of the Corridor that work with Third Man Records to plant a new foundation there to help keep that creative spirit alive for decades to come.”

Watch the White Stripes perform on Detriot public access television

Jack White recently opened the vault do White Stripes’ music and shared rarely seen footage from the band’s early days. The duo made their television debut on May 28th, 2000 on Backstage Pass, a program on public access television in Detroit. They previewed their second album, De Stijl, which would come out the following month, on the program, performing the songs, “Apple Blossom” and “Death Letter”.

To find the footage, it is available on the new streaming service, TIDAL, as Jack White is a co-owner of the company. Watch it here.

As well as this archival footage, a White Stripes’ cover of “Rated X” by Loretta Lynn will be released in the upcoming package from the subscription service, The Vault from Third Man Record. The cover was originally recorded in 2000 but was then kept away from the public since then, however, the 7-inch will have a b-side of a live recording of Lynn’s “Whispering Sea” which was recorded in George, Washinggton at the Gorge Amphitheater on August 6th, 2005. Listen to a sample of “Rated X” here.

Streaming service TIDAL promises “to re-establish the value of music”

Jay Z has formally launched his streaming service TIDAL at an all-star event in New York City. Apparently, Jay Z is simply a co-owner and shares ownership with Win Butler and Régine Chassagne from Arcade Fire, Kanye West, Jack White, Daft Punk, Beyoncé, Chris Martin of Coldplay, and Madonna.

These artists all were at the event today and signed their commitment on-stage by signing a declaration.

The streaming service is described as a “platform owned by artists” and has a goal “to re-establish the value of music.” Keys explained on the behalf of the group, “We want to create a better service and experience for fans and artists. Our mission goes beyond commerce and technology.”

The video following the event had footage from a summit recently where the owners of TIDAL to talk about their vision. Daft Punk talked about the summit as “the Avengers of Music.”

It was previously reported that TIDAL offers two different subscription offers: $19.99 for a month of high-fidelity audio and $9.99 for standard audio. TIDAL could be streamed on the web, and downloaded with iOS and Android devices.

TIDAL owners will exclusively release music through the platform but it is not yet confirmed.

Jack White shares new song “Blue Light, Red Light (Someone’s There)”

Jack White recently announced that “That Black Bat Licorice” is the latest single off of his sophomore album as a solo artist, Lazaretto. The 7-inch single will be available February 17th on Third Man Records and it contains a new song for the B-Side, a cover of “Blue Light, Red Light (Someone’s There)” by Harry Connick, Jr.

Bob Dylan honored at MusiCares tribute

Bob Dylan was honored last night at a tribute concert to benefit MusiCares. The lineup featured Jack White, Beck, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Willie Nelson, and others. It also had a lengthy speech from Dylan who thanked his early supporters and jibed at critics of his vocals and other famous detractors according to Rolling Stone.

Young covered “Blowin’ in the Wind,” Beck covered “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat,” White did “One More Cup of Coffee,” Springsteen did “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and Crosby Stills and Nash performed “Girl From the North Country.”

Dylan thanked icons such as Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Nina Simone, Joan Baez, the Staple Singers, the Byrds, the Turtles, Peter Paul & Mary, Sonny & Cher, and others for supporting his music in his speech. He also talked about some famous artists who wrote him off early on, including the iconic songwriting duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and country legend Merle Haggard. “I didn’t really care what Leiber & Stoller thought of my songs,” he said, “’cause I didn’t like their songs, either.”

Dylan also said, “critics say I can’t sing, I sound like a frog. Why don’t critics say that about Tom Waits? Critics say my voice is shot. Why don’t they say that about Leonard Cohen? What have I done to get this special attention?”
