Record Store Day 2016 announces release list

Record Store Day will return on April 16th. The list of releases available at independent record stores exclusively that day was announced today. Find the full list here for the U.S. and here for the UK. Artists like David Bowie, Run the Jewels, the Weeknd, Outkast, J Dilla, Mac DeMarco, Bob Dylan, Chvrches, the Flaming Lips, Jay Reatard, the Shaggs, Big Star, Fleetwood Mac, Foals, Best Coast, Jason Molina, and many more are included. Here are a few of the highlights of what is coming out:

  • David Bowie reissues of “TVC 15” and “The Man Who Sold the World” on picture disc, and the 50th anniversary release of his singles, I Dig Everything – The Pye Years 1966 
  • A 16-track album of Mac DeMarco demos, Another (Demo) One, which were in his bedroom
  • Unheard songs by the Shaggs on a 7″, “Sweet Maria” b/w “The Missouri Waltz (Missouri State Song)”
  • J Dilla’s long-lost vocal album The Diary
  • Big Star’s reunion show Complete Columbia: Live at Missouri University 4/25/93, on double-LP
  • Patti Smith’s Horses Live Electric Lady Studios, a live version of the classic album, recorded last year in the same studio
  • The Weeknd’s The Hills Remixes, which features Eminem and Nicki Minaj
  • Run the Jewels’ own virtual reality viewer (for watching their “Crown” VR video, which is coming soon)
  • Metz and Mission of Burma cover one another on “Good Not Great” b/w “Get Off,” available on starburst 7″
  • Florence + the Machine’s “Delilah / Only Love Can Break Your Heart,” which has studio and demo versions of “Delilah” alongside the Neil Young cover
  • Outkast’s “Elevators (Me & You),” reissued as a “glow-in-the-dark alien vinyl” for the 20th anniversary of ATLiens
  • The Feelies’ Uncovered, which features covers of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Doors, Patti Smith, and more
  • Fleetwood Mac’s (Alternative) Tusk, that features the alternative version of the album on double-LP

OutKast apparently declined performing at the Super Bowl

Big Boi appeared on today’s episode of ESPN’s “The Dan LeBatard Show,” where he asked Big Boi about the most memorable sports event he has ever played. After a seeing, Big Boi then talked about how OutKast were invited to play a the Super Bowl halftime show once but they turned down the chance because André 3000 didn’t agree to play anything but full songs. Listen to his comments here around the four-minute mark. 

The songs they were to perform were “The Way You Move” and “Hey Ya!.”According to Big Boi, the organizers of the Bowl refused to give them enough time to perform both songs in full. Big Boi said,” [Andre] didn’t want to cut the songs, he wanted to do the full songs. He said, ‘Nah, can’t do it.'”

When Big Boi was asked if he tried to convince André to change his mind, Big Boi said: “A lot.” He also said they laughed about it recently. “Hopefully they invite us back,” he said.

Big Boi implies that they were asked to play the 2004 halftime show when the infamous “wardrobe malfunction” incident occurred during Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson’s performance.

André 3000 to turn his jumpsuits into a t-shirt collection

One-half of Outkast, André 3000, will turn his wisdom into something wearable. In his recent interview with Hard Knock TV, André 3000 revealed that he has plans to turn his custom jumpsuits that he has worn in Outkast’s recent reunion tour into a T-shirt collection. He says, “You’ll be able to see that really soon, because people have been asking me.” Watch the interview below.

In another recent interview with FADER, he compared the sayings on his jumpsuits to Tweets. “I felt like it was cool that I could say crazy thoughts or fun stuff. And I think it actually gets more attention because it is what it is instead of tweeting it. And Twitter, from what I know of, you only have a certain amount of characters, like 150. My space was just right here,” he said.

Top 10 Moments of Austin City Limits Weekend Two

10. The Calvin Harris set in its entirety. It was as if the audience almost shook the ground during the set. Mixing a variety of songs, such as “I Don’t Care” by Icona Pop, Harris seemed virtually unstoppable and looked as though he was on top of the world. Many fans had been at the festival since 9, or even earlier, in the morning waiting for Harris, thus making the experience all the worthwhile.

9. When Davy Havoc from AFI crowdsurfed. He went into the crowd various occasions while singing. However, this time, he climbed over the front few rows and balanced himself amongst audience members  to finish off one of the songs. Many fans were glad he had stepped over, and on, them, receiving bragging rights for the rest of their lives.

8. The absolute raw energy during Spoon’s set. The Austin natives seem to have an unwavering attitude to them that keeps crowds coming performance after performance. Their set during this festival was no exception. There is absolutely no beating watching Spoon play as the sun begins to set in the background.

7. Temples’ style and performance. The way the band dresses and sound makes their listeners and audience time travel back to the 1970’s. With that sort of early Led Zeppelin influenced style and psychedelic rock sound, there is nothing that could make Temples’ set more enjoyable.

6. Mø’s general vibe towards the audiences. It seemed as though she treated everyone as if they were on stage with her as she spent a few songs actually in the crowd.

5. How happy Fitz and the Tantrums seemed to be performing at the festival. Performing both weekends and a show in between in Austin, it seemed as though they were still genuinely ecstatic that they were able to perform three times in a row in the Austin.

4. Jack Antonoff’s energy. Playing during what felt like the hottest part of the day, Bleachers seemed unstoppable when it comes down to their energy, and maybe a part of that were a part of that.

3. When St. Vincent pulled an Eddie Vedder and climbed up on the side of the stage and began acting as though she was falling off. Her set overall was the typical wildness that she is so closely related to. At the end of her set, she stole a hat, glasses, and a crutch from various audience members in the front row and wore them until she left the stage.

2. Outkast. Currently on a reunion festival tour, Outkast seems to be just as exciting as they were when they were just starting out.

1. Finally, Young and Sick never seem to disappoint in a live setting. The feeling from listening to their music is so unmatched.
