Thom Yorke scoring Suspiria remake

Thom Yorke is scoring the upcoming horror movie Suspiria. This is the first time that Yorke has scored a feature-length film. Suspiria is the remake of a 1977 film of the same name. The remake is directed by Luca Guadagnino and stars Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, and Chloë Grace Moretz. The movie does not have a release date yet, but filming has been completed and is in post-production. In a statement, Guadgnino said, “Thom’s art transcends the contemporary. To have the privilege of his music and sound for Suspiria is a dream come true. The depth of his creation and artistic vision is so unique that our Suspiria will sound groundbreaking and will deeply resonate with viewers. Our goal is to make a movie that will be a disturbing and transforming experience: for this ambition, we could not find a better partner than Thom.”

Song Review: Love Galore

Last week, SZA released a new song. It features Travis Scott and is named “Love Galore”. A music video was released along with it and I would advise against watching it at work. Those are the facts. Now for some opinion. The song is great. SZA, as she often does, is able to pair her smooth and sultry voice with minimalistic beats that get out of the way of her voice. Crooning about lost lovers sounds like it could almost turn into the song of the summer between her great singing and Travis Scott’s auto tuned emotion. While Scott often uses auto tune, this slowed down and mellowed song puts the full effect of the software on display. Scott is able to reach out to the listener through the disjointed notes, perfectly capturing the disconnect of emotions. When contrasted with SZA’s clear voice, the effect is nothing short of great.

The music video however, while the butterflies are stunning, comes up short. See for yourself:

Hear Elliott Smith’s unreleased live version of “Pretty (Ugly Before)” from new Planned Parenthood compilation

It was announced last month that a massive 7″ singles compilation benefitting Planned Parenthood would feature songs from Björk, Bon Iver, Sleater-Kinney, Foo Fighters, the National’s Matt Berninger and Bryce Dessner, and more. One of the “more” was Elliott Smith, whose unreleased live version of “Pretty (Ugly Before)” has been revealed. Listen to the song below, which was recorded in 1999, years before it appeared posthumously on From a Basement on the Hill. The track features an accompaniment from Jon Brion on pump organ. According to Mark Flanagan, the owner of L.A. venue Largo, where the performance was recorded, this was the first time Smith ever played the song live.

“Jon [Brion] happened to be at Largo that night and he and Elliott sequestered themselves in my tiny upstairs office and he played us the song,” Flanagan said in a statement. “I found this cassette recording among the many cassette recordings I have of his shows from almost 20 years ago and can think of no better place for it to find it’s way to all kind people who support girls young and older in our world.”

Elliott Smith’s estate also issued a statement with the release of the song:

Elliott did and said many things in his life that showed his commitment to the principles that Planned Parenthood stands for, including equal rights for all, affordable and accessible access to healthcare, and a woman’s autonomy over her body. He was an outspoken feminist (evidenced not only by his actions and countless conversations with friends and family, but also by his culminating college thesis written in spring of 1991 entitled “Toward a Post-Structuralist Feminist Jurisprudence”). He went out of his way to play for or otherwise contribute to charitable causes. For these reasons, and so many more, Elliott’s family has no doubt that he would feel very proud to be part of this project.
