Thom Yorke compares writing Suspiria score to “making spells”

Thom Yorke participated in a panel at this year’s Venice Film Festival for his soundtrack for the upcoming Luca Guadagnino-directed horror remake of Suspiria. In an Instatgram clip (below) Yorke had compared his process of composing to “making spells.”

“There’s a way of repeating in music which can hypnotize, and I kept thinking to myself it was a form of making spells. So when I was working in my studio, I was making spells—and that sounds really stupid but that’s how I was thinking about it,” he said. “It was a sort of freedom I’d not had before: I’m not working in the format of a song or arrangement, I’m just exploring. I’m putting things out into my studio and seeing what my studio is bringing back.”

Thom Yorke scoring Suspiria remake

Thom Yorke is scoring the upcoming horror movie Suspiria. This is the first time that Yorke has scored a feature-length film. Suspiria is the remake of a 1977 film of the same name. The remake is directed by Luca Guadagnino and stars Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, and Chloë Grace Moretz. The movie does not have a release date yet, but filming has been completed and is in post-production. In a statement, Guadgnino said, “Thom’s art transcends the contemporary. To have the privilege of his music and sound for Suspiria is a dream come true. The depth of his creation and artistic vision is so unique that our Suspiria will sound groundbreaking and will deeply resonate with viewers. Our goal is to make a movie that will be a disturbing and transforming experience: for this ambition, we could not find a better partner than Thom.”

These are the least pirated musicians of the year

The highly popular download website, BitTorrent, has released data about the most downloaded artist legally, and leaving Thom Yorke, Radiohead frontman on the top spot.

Yorke released he second solo album, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes only on BitTorrent as a download in September. Yorke explained about his album’s release: “It’s an experiment to see if the mechanics of the system are something that the general public can get its head around. If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work.”

This experiment worked in his advantage as the album received 1.1 million downloads in the first week of the release.

Among the other artists whose music was legally downloaded on BitTorrent are Diplo, De La Soul, and Hundred Waters.
