Sam Herring and Madlib pair up as Trouble Knows Me

Samuel T. Herring from Future Islands is not a stranger to the rap scene. Now, the singer, known as Hemlock Ernst, is going on another level by working with producer Madlib for a new project named Trouble Knows Me.

The duo is set to release a self-titled 12-inch on September 1st which features three instrumentals and three rap tracks. A limited amount of screen-printed covers are available now through Rappcats. Madlib will also sold them at his show tonight at The Mid in Chicago, with covers screen printed on site. They will also be sold at a Rappcats popup shop on 5636 York Boulevard in Los Angeles Saturday between 12-4 p.m.

As a preview to the release, they shared a self-titled track, “Trouble Knows Me.” Listen below:

Wavves releases new song “Way Too Much”

Nathan Williams has been working on various side projects through the last year, weather it is his Cloud Nothings collaboration or the bro trio Spirit Club and yet, he is still set to release his own album under his original name also. Now it seems as though he released the lead single to the upcoming Wavves album which is set to come out this year. The song, called “Way Too Much,” is the first hint at the follow-up to the 2013 release, Afraid of Heights. Listen to it on Spotify here.

Williams released the song early without the permission of his label. Warner Bros. wanted to pull the song but he protested through a series of tweets, saying he would leak the entire album if they took the track down. It looks as though Williams won, “Way Too Much” will stay on Spotify and will be officially released on iTunes on Monday.

Arcade Fire to release first feature film The Reflektor Tapes

Arcade Fire’s first feature film, called The Reflektor Tapes, will go to theaters worldwide on September 24th for a short time. According to the official statement, the film is “a unique cinematic experience, meeting at the crossroads of documentary, music, art and personal history.”

Arcade Fire Tube first reported on last year that the film is directed by Kahlil Joseph, who has worked with FKA twigs’ “Video Girl” and short films with Kendrick Lamar and Flying Lotus. Based on the images released and the title, it seems like a lot of it will focus on the recording sessions and tour for the band’s Reflektor album from 2013.

Ticket information and theater listings will be posted on the film’s website, TheReflektorTapes.com soon.

An eight-minute part of the film named “Porno” has been released. It is soundtracked by the song from Reflektor of the same name. Watch below.

FIDLAR premieres new version of “West Coast”

FIDLAR is planned to return with sophomore album, Too, this coming September. The follow-up to the self-titled LP will include 12 new garage punk tracks. The album was recorded in just two weeks in Nashville and was the first time the band worked with a producer, namely Jay Joyce.

“We could have made record number one again… but instead we decided to challenge ourselves and admit that we don’t know everything,” Zac Carper, guitarist and lead vocalist said in a press release. “I didn’t want to make a standard rock record. The goal for this album was to think outside the box and I think Jay really helped us do that.”

Justin Vernon says there’s no plans for a new Bon Iver album or tour

Upon hearing that Bon Iver would headline Justin Vernon’s Eaux Claires Music Festival, there was hope that there would be more in the near future. Even though he expressed disinterest in continuing the group, Vernon confirmed that the festival appearance would be the “beginning of its third cycle” for the band. According to a Grantland interview, Vernon said there is no plans for a comeback album just yet.
“I’ve been taking it really slow,” Vernon said about his writing process. “I don’t mean to get all cerebral about my art, but I’ve been trying to collect improvisations and collect moments. Like, real moments, [and] put them in a pot and serve them up.” He continued, “I’m thinking more, I guess, like a painter or a sculptor, like Andy Goldsworthy or something, in the way I’m putting songs together. To be clear, I’m not doing that to try and be fancy. I just think maybe I ran my course with being able to come up with new moments on the guitar.”
In the same way, the singer-songwriter does not want to get too ahead of himself with Bon Iver’s long term future. Currently, Vernon wants to focus on the immediate future, which does not include a new album or tour:

“As far as putting a record together, I don’t really know what’s happening. Our show is our main focus. We don’t have anything booked after this. We don’t have any plans. We’re not being secretive — we just don’t have any plans. It’s just about, ‘Play the show and put all of our energy into one show’ — for once in my life, let’s just play one fucking show and care just about this one show for a goddamn change. It’s better than, ‘All right, we’re going out on tour and we’re going to hit these markets and this, that, and the other.’ We might play some new stuff. I don’t know, we’re going to figure it out. I go home next week for two weeks of rehearsals and play with my boys.”

Vernon is new approach seems to be related to the band’s “overwhelming” success. During the same interview, he talks about his Bon Iver was used in Bushmills’ whiskey advertisement. “It’s run by a corporation, and you kind of forget that they’re not interested in you or really what you’re doing,” he said. “They’re interested in your popularity and your reach, and it felt really sickening after a while. Not badmouthing Bushmills the company, but I regret it. I regret it because it wasn’t us and they put my face on a fucking billboard, even though it was a cool billboard and I was with my brother and my sound engineer and we’re buds and we got drunk while we had the photo shoot.”

Vernon admits, “I just missed it. I missed the mark on that one and I let it all kind of get to me.”
Eaux Claires will take place July 17th – 18th in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The lineup features The National, Sufjan Stevens, The Tallest Man on Earth, and more.
